What Can I Do If I Experience Domestic Violence

If you or somebody you know is experiencing domestic violence, you deserve to get support.

Two women from The Phoenix Group, a local group of women from different backgrounds who have experienced domestic violence encourage women to ask for help.

“I didn’t know if I could leave and how my children would cope. It was hard, but I got out and now we have a new life.”

“I was ashamed to upset my family. But I decided to be strong and get help. There is a life after violence.”

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence happens in many ways, usually involving somebody in your family (and can include people of the same sex).

Domestic violence doesn't just mean physical abuse. It might include emotional abuse such as being told you are a useless mother all the time, or being bullied or dominated in any way by your partner.

Some important information to consider if you are in an abusive relationship:

you are not the only one

you are not to blame

ignoring violence is dangerous

domestic violence affects children, too

you don’t have to deal with it alone

it is your right to be free of the violence

You can talk in confidence with someone at the agencies listed below.

You can ask for an interpreter if you need one.
