Safety Plan

Remember that the following tips may be very useful to women who experience domestic violence, in an emergency.

Documentation - such as benefit books, medical cards, bank books, cheque books, marriage / birth certificate, passports.

If you have an injunction or non-molestation order, keep a copy for yourself and check with solicitors that a copy has been sent to the police.

If possible, save money for bus, taxi or bus fares.

Clothing: keep a set for yourself and dependants / children in a bag.

Have any spare medication easily available.

Include some children’s toys the emergency packed bag.

Carry a list of telephone numbers to call in an emergency.

Keep a spare set of house / car keys in a safe place.

Keep a telephone available to use / get a mobile phone.

Talk to your children about the problems. They will probably be aware of what is going on. If appropriate, discuss the escape plan. If possible, take children / dependants with you as it can be difficult to gain access to them otherwise at a later date.

If possible, leave when the abuser is not around, to ensure your safety.

You may be able to get support from the police or other agency to return home to get other belongings later.
